Self Publishing Scams: How to Spot Them.

The publishing world is fraught with predatory vanity presses posing as British partners. Protect your manuscript and your finances by identifying these six universal red flags.

01

Unsolicited Cold Calls

Legitimate publishing houses do not spend their days calling authors who have just finished a manuscript. If a "Senior Acquisition Editor" calls you out of the blue, they are a salesperson working on commission, not an editor.

02

Bestseller Guarantees

No ethical publisher can guarantee a bestseller status. These "guarantees" often involve manipulating Amazon categories for a few minutes to take a screenshot. Real success is earned through quality and marketing, not manufactured by a service provider.

03

Charging for "Free" ISBNs

In the UK, ISBNs are managed by Nielsen. While they cost money to buy in bulk, scammers often charge authors £500+ for a "Premium ISBN Package" that actually lists the scammer as the publisher of record, stripping you of your independence.

04

Stock Photo Testimonials

Search for the "authors" listed on their site. Scammers frequently use stock images of smiling professionals with fake names. A real workshop will link to live Amazon pages of the books they have actually produced.

05

Vague "Editorial Boards"

If they claim their "Editorial Board" has approved your book but won't tell you who is on it or provide an actual critique of your writing, they haven't read it. They just want your deposit.

06

"Hybrid" Model Confusion

Scammers use the term "Hybrid" to sound modern, but they lack the vetting process of a true hybrid publisher. If they accept 100% of the manuscripts submitted to them, they are a vanity press, not a hybrid publisher.

What a Legitimate Company Looks Like

  • check_circle Transparent, fixed pricing listed on the website.
  • check_circle You retain 100% of your rights and royalties.
  • check_circle A physical UK office address and a registered UK company number.
  • check_circle Willingness to talk through technical details (bleed, font kerning, paper weights).

If You Have Already Been Scammed

Do not feel ashamed; these organizations are professional psychological manipulators. Take immediate action:

1. BANK CHARGEBACKS

If you paid by credit card within the last 120 days, contact your bank and initiate a Section 75 claim (Consumer Credit Act) for services not as described.

2. TRADING STANDARDS

Report the company to Citizens Advice, who will forward the report to Trading Standards. This helps build a case for legal action against rogue traders.
